Rapid growth in plastic raw material imports (2007–2024)

Plastic raw material imports have surged across several African nations between 2007 and 2024, reflecting strong industrial demand and market growth.

  • Algeria: from 304 kt in 2007 to 1,095 kt in 2024, +260%
  • Morocco: from 374 kt in 2007 to 810 kt in 2024, +117%
  • Tunisia: from 209 kt in 2007 to 326 kt in 2024, +56%
  • Nigeria: from 513 kt in 2007 to 999 kt in 2024, +95%
  • Ethiopia: from 54 kt in 2010 to 294 in 2024, +444%

Algeria’s strategic position

  • With 1,095 kt of plastic raw material imports in 2024, Algeria ranks as the 3rd largest importer in Africa and the Middle East, behind only the UAE and Egypt.
  • As Algeria imports all its plastic raw materials, mainly from the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, the country represents tremendous export potential for international suppliers.

Algeria is the largest importer of plastics technology  in Africa

  • Algeria’s imports of plastics technology increased by 34.6% annually between 2020 and 2024, from €91m to €299m.

  • This makes Algeria the largest importer of plastics technology on the African continent before Morocco (230m), South Africa (€205m) and Egypt (€175m). (VDMA)

With €225m in 2024, Algeria is also the largest importer of packaging technology in Africa, ahead of Egypt (€192m), South Africa (€185m), Morocco (€152) and Nigeria (€121m). (VDMA)
