Imports of plastic raw materials grew by 9.0% annually between 2007 and 2020, from 304 kt to 931kt!

Plastic raw material imports of other countries over the past years have developed as follows:

  • Algeria: from 304 kt in 2007 to 931 kt in 2020, +306%
  • Morocco: from 374 kt in 2007 to 659 kt in 2020, +76%
  • Tunisia: from 209 kt in 2007 to 326 kt in 2020, +56%
  • Nigeria: from 513 kt in 2007 to 848 kt in 2020, +65%
  • Ethiopia: from 54 kt in 2010 to 224 in 2020, +415%

  • As all plastic raw materials are imported (mainly from the Middle East, Asia and Europe), the Algerian market has an immense potential for exporters.
  • With imports of 931 kt in 2020, Algeria is the second largest importer of plastics in primary forms in Africa and the Middle East.
  • Following Egypt and well ahead of the UAE with 896 kt, Nigeria with 848 kt, Israel with 782 kt, Saudi Arabia with 600 kt and South Africa with 539 kt.

Algeria is the largest importer of plastics technology in the Maghreb and one of the largest in Africa

With €126m in 2022, Algeria is the largest importer of plastics technology in the Maghreb, ahead of Morocco with €84m and Tunisia with €52m.

Together with Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa, Algeria is one of Africa's largest importers of plastics technology. Algeria's main suppliers are China, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Spain and Turkey.

Algeria is one of the largest importers of packaging technology in Africa

With €127m in 2022, Algeria belongs to the leading importers of packaging technology on the African continent, together with Nigeria (€183m), South Africa (175m) and Egypt (€162m).

Italy, Germany, China, France, India, Turkey, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and the USA have been the main suppliers for the African continent in 2022.
